Reality Check cover reveal!

Reality Check Cover

Here it is!

Hydra Publications will soon be releasing my science fiction novel, Reality Check, in e-book form.  I’m very excited about that, and the paperback release to follow.

In the meantime, I’m very proud to present to you, a preview of the cover for Reality Check!

The beautiful artwork was done by Nell Williams. Nell very patiently worked with my fussy specifications and imbued it with the emotions she picked up from the characters in this pivotal scene from the book. Frank Hall, publisher of Hydra Publications, provided the striking typography.

I hope to have more news about Reality Check within a week.

Press Release: I’m part of Seventh Star Press now!

Press Release: I’m part of Seventh Star Press now!

I’m not really comfortable hyping myself, so it’s nice when someone else does it.  Any publisher that’s this into my beer books, has got to be a keeper.

Addie J. King Interview

Addie J. King Interview

In the tradition of the Next Big Thing blog tagging that’s been going on, fantasy author Addie J. King asked me if I’d like to participate.  I told her thank you, I had already done it, but she decided to do me the honor of linking to what I’d written for it a couple of weeks ago.  Please allow me to introduce you to her.

Addie and I met on a panel she was running on Modern Fairy Tales at Context in 2012.  We discussed the topic as panelists along with Guest of Honor L.E. Modesitt, Jr.  It was a great talk, and Addie ran the panel with professional charm.  Her book, The Grimm Legacy, is on my to-read list for sure, since we share an interest in updating fairy tales to the modern world.

Without further ado, please click the link and read Addie talking about her own “next big thing” in her own words!

HOT SINATRA release day!

HOT SINATRA release day!

As a fan of Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe detective stories, I’m looking forward to reading this.  I’ve read the author’s quirky/fun/gritty/but-warm short story “A Manlove & Kickerdick Xmess” in the Let It Snow! anthology and loved his style.

Blue Spirit in the Kindle lending library!

Blue SpiritMy novel, Blue Spirit, just went live in the Amazon Kindle Select program.  This means, if you are an Amazon Prime member, you can borrow the book for free (and I get a little pocket change for each one).  Did you get a Kindle for Christmas?  That sucker came with free Amazon Prime for a month… the clock is ticking, go take advantage of it while you can!

Anyone else may buy the book, of course, and you don’t have to have an actual Kindle to read it that way.  There’s a Kindle app for all smartphones, tablets, and even for a PC or laptop.

What’s it about?  Well, it’s about Skye, who has a little sort-of fairy Mini-Me, a little extension of herself into the fairy world. A world full of dark and dangerous beings, and Skye can only see into that world when she’s had a drink or three. But to keep her vampire gamer friends safe, she’s got to risk losing everything important to her.

The Hand of God has been released!

The Hand of God

My fellow Hydra Publications author Tony Acree has just released his dark urban fantasy novel, The Hand of God, in the Kindle Store!  Be sure to check it out.

Here’s an excerpt:

It was 6 p.m. when the Devil walked into my office and had a seat.

Bounty hunter Victor McCain always wondered how his brother, Mikey, went from down-n-out loser to one of Louisville’s richest men. Now he knew: his brother sold his soul to the Devil. And in twenty-four hours, Mikey would die and spend eternity in Hell unless Victor agreed to hunt down a thief, a woman as deadly as she is beautiful. On a journey of murder and betrayal, Victor must now put his own soul at risk to save his only brother, battle a dark underground organization with the goal of nothing less than global war between Christians and Muslims, and fight creatures from man’s darkest nightmares. Then there’s the Hand of God, God’s own bounty hunter. In the end, will he be friend or enemy? Only Heaven knows.

Next Big Thing – Authors Tagging Authors

I am excited to take part in The Next Big Thing: Authors Tagging Authors!  I was tagged by RJ Sullivan, who has been an excellent peer mentor for me for two years now.  It may show the auspicious company I keep, since I attempted to tag 5 author friends, and all of them had participated in this already.  I just didn’t get to them first.

What is the title of your next book/work?

Reality Check is the name of the science fiction novel I have in the works with Hydra Publications.  No release date is set, but it’ll be out this year sometime.

Where did the idea come from for the book/work?

I had this idea rattling around in my head for a few years, after hearing about quantum computers. The idea is that the “qbits” in a quantum computer actually use those possibly cat-killing indefinite states to reach into alternate universes, but only the part that is the right state ends up resolving in our universe.  This implied to me that there were other computers in other universes that got different answers, but that were right for that universe.

So, I thought, what if you had a computer that could swap your identity with the identity of someone very much like you, in a completely different, but parallel, world?  And from there, I thought, what if the people around you were there as well, including your closest friends and loves, but in those places, everything could be different, including the relationships you have with people there?

It was one of those ideas that nagged at me a long time, then crystallized into an actual story concept that demanded to be written… it even took precedence over a sequel I’d been writing.

What genre does your book/work fall under?

It’s a science fiction novel, but it’s got fantastic elements (the main character visits a steampunk world, for instance).

What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie rendition?

Oh wow.  Hmm….

Lee Green, the MC, is a stocky redhead who can fix anything Seth Green keeps coming to mind, not just because of the last name coincidence, and not just for the red hair, but because he could deliver the fun dry lines Lee gets in the book and keep a straight face.  Maybe Seth Rogen, to fit the body type better.  Hmm. Maybe Felicia Day, for part of it, but that’s a spoiler.

Cecil, Lee’s best friend, could be played by Kal Penn.  He’s dark and can be hilarious or deadly serious at times.

For Dionne, Lee’s brainy close friend and love interest, I’d need someone with Jennifer Aniston‘s hair, but  Emma Watson would portray her personality better.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

“Lee Green is switched into alternate versions of his life by a quantum computer, and he must save those lives as he becomes entangled.”

Okay, it needs work, but will do for now.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

I’m thrilled that it’s being published by Hydra Publications.  So far, I’ve very much enjoyed working with those folks.  It’s like being part of a new virtual family of authors, editors and artists.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript?

The rough draft was born in a furious month of frustration and creativity, National Novel Writing Month, November of 2011.  I spent the next 6 months revising and rewriting and editing and polishing it, with the help of many friends and other alpha- and beta-readers before submitting it to Hydra.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

That’s a tough one.  I wrote the story because I felt I had a unique concept, or at least one that hadn’t been beaten into the ground.  It’s a real “what if” story in the grand tradition of science fiction.

There’s a long tradition of alternate history science fiction out there, like H. Beam Piper’s Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen, but this is much more personal than that.  It’s the reverse of Doctor Who… instead of all of time and space, this takes place right now, in one person’s life… just in different circumstances, different realities.

Who or what inspired you to write this book?

Well, I had that idea rattling around, but it was my friend and mentor Sara Larson who encouraged me to branch out in my writing, since my self-published novels had all been in the same urban fantasy series beforehand.  She encouraged me not only to write something new, but to take my work more seriously and find a publisher for it.

What else about the book might pique the reader’s interest?

Here are some points, complete with exciting exclamation points, provided to me by marketing:

  • Airships!
  • Cybernetic zombie squirrel!
  • Virtual (or is it?) reality!
  • Artificial intelligence!
  • Lust!
  • Silly hats!
  • Robotic Moon Scorpions!
  • Gender-swapping!
  • Jumping lunar hopper battle!
  • Sexy female mad scientist!
  • MacGyver-ish problem solving!

Hydra Games is talking me up!

Hydra Games is talking me up!

It’s so nice to be a part of Hydra Games.  They’ve been doing posts about me all week.  I’d better get to work on that first module for them!

My novel Reality Check was signed by Hydra Publications!

So, Reality Check is a dimension-hopping science fiction adventure novel that I wrote last year.  I spent most of this year polishing it, running it past beta-readers, adding material and reworking the plot.  I submitted it to Hydra Publications awhile back, and just this morning got the contract signed for it to be published through them!
I’ll post more news as things progress, but to say I’m thrilled about this first novel deal would be a vast understatement!

I’m going out of print…

…for awhile.  In a few days, I plan to take down all print versions of my books.  I’ll still be offering epub versions, and if you catch me in person, I do have a supply of hard copy books still that I’ll sign and sell to you.

Why? Well, I want to re-evaluate print. Since Print on Demand (POD) is so easy and costs nothing to offer, I don’t think I’ll ever completely abandon print. But I’ve been told there are better options.

Plus, I’m considering taking Amazon up on their Kindle Select program, which could mean a big free Kindle-format giveaway in the future.

So, if you really want a paper copy of any of my books, you’d best go get them now or contact me to get one of the limited supply I have in stock!
