A Very Transgender Whiteboard Wednesday

I thought I’d do something different for this Whiteboard Wednesday. Tonight, in Indianapolis, at Indy Reads Books, there will be an Indy Pride Week event called, “History Night: Being Transgender in Indiana“.

“Focusing on the transgender community, History Night at Indy Reads Books will feature conversations and readings from C. Michael Woodward, prominent lecturer and author; Marissa Miller, the Program Director for Brothers United; and Executive Director of the Indiana Transgender Wellness Alliance, Jacqueline Patterson.”

Indy Reads Books has graciously agreed to feature paperback copies of my transgender steampunk book, Trans-Continental: Girl in the Gears. I am going to make an attempt to be there, but the event has over 500 RSVPs, and Indy Reads Books can only hold 100 people. There are going to be remote gatherings at Indiana Youth Group, The Metro, and Theatre on the Square, as well as online via video streaming.

I’m not actually wearing a duct tape steampunk top hat, but I AM wearing a cat-astronaut t-shirt given to me by my friend Johnna. 🙂 And yeah, my hair is that messy.

Buy a book, help the Transgender Lifeline, save transgender lives.

For its launch month of June, I’ve decided to donate all online profits of my book, Trans-Continental: Girl in the Gears, to the Trans Lifeline.

Why?

Last year, I was moved by the Transgender Day of Remembrance to out myself as transgender to help with trans visibility, and to be a positive ambassador for trans folks.

I was also moved to write a steampunk book with a transgender main character because trans stories are mostly being told by non-trans people, and many of those stories either portrays us as victims or sexual objects. So, in Ida, I have a transgender heroine in the type of story I would like to read.

Girl in the Gears was #9 best seller in LGBT Science Fiction and #51 in Steampunk on Amazon on the day I announced pre-orders, and launched yesterday and ranked #8 in LGBT Science Fiction and #34 in steampunk. All of the money from the sales that got it there is going to the Trans Lifeline.

I’ve set the price at $7.95, which is pretty close to cost, after print-on-demand and Amazon’s cut. I did this because I want the book to be affordable, so new readers will give me a chance and want to read my other books.

It’s also got Matchbook set up so that if you buy the paperback, you get the ebook for free. And hey, if you have Amazon Prime, the shipping is free! And if you don’t, just throw Blue Spirit and Reality Check in the cart for free shipping. 🙂

I won’t lie, it’ll help me out a LOT if people pre-order, since all those sales will hit on the same day, and could propel me up in the ranks and get the book seen by even more people and so on.

This book is very important to me, it’s my first transgender tale, and I’ve felt strongly about it ever since the idea came to me in a dream one night in November. If you are at all interested, please consider picking up a copy. Thank you!

Paperback book envy: my proofs are in for Trans-Continental: Girl in the Gears & Blue Spirit!

THE PROOF IS HERE! The print proof copy of Trans-Continental: Girl in the Gears arrived today! The book will be released on June 1st, in both ebook and paperback forms together, and I’m making these both very affordable.

Sorry about the color, I tried to adjust for the glare of the lamp I took the picture under, but it looks more washed out here than it did on my phone:

This novella makes for a thin trade paperback, but not as thin as I worried it would be. It’s over 120 pages anyway. This is how I can make these more affordable, I didn’t blow up the font or scrunch in the margins to make it thicker. And thinner books mean fewer pages, less paper, and so it is “greener”, not wasting paper that way.

GitGproof4Here’s the interior, and a bit of a tease if you want to squint and get yourself some spoilers. So far, there’s only one tiny correction I need to make, and then I will be able to order a big batch of these to sell in person!
