Whiteboard Wednesday: Steampunk dreams

Trans-Continental DreamerYup, it came to me in a dream. One night in November, I woke at around 2:30am with a movie-like dream fading in my mind. I rushed out to the kitchen and stood shivering as I scribbled any and all details that I could on the pad of paper we use for the grocery list. In the morning, I had a lot of scrawl that even I had a hard time deciphering, but the important things came through. A transgender woman character and an artful dodger type partner, flying around a steampunk world in an airship with no ladder. So they had to float up to tall things, like buildings or ships with tall masts, to climb out. They were likeable criminals, just taking what they needed to get by.

I ended up dropping the work I had in progress, and in December, I started writing Trans-Continental: Girl in the Gears. It’s not a lot like the dream I had, but that seed of an idea has blossomed into something I’m very proud of, and excited to share with the world. It’s in final edits now. My plan is to have it out by June, but that may change depending on how things fall together.

Hunter’s Moon: A flash story for the Iron Writer Challenge

Alas, this story didn’t win the Kurt Vonnegut bracket of the 2015 Spring Iron Writer Open Tournament. But I don’t feel bad, because I was up against some good friends, and I think all the stories were good. The judges and the popular vote didn’t favor me, however. Here it is for those of you who were curious which story was mine. There was a tiny hint to my readers that this was my story… post a reply if you catch it!

Elements: The Goddess Artemis, A Dilettante, Jello Wrestling, A Moon Rock

Hunter’s Moon

2015 Iron Writer Spring Open

“You have no idea how honored I am to be your guest,” I said to the tall, beautiful woman who met me at the airport.

She nodded at me without so much as a smile and snapped her fingers. Several hairy men stepped out of the crowd in unison and flanked us as we made our way to Baggage Claim.

Diana Archer walked a step ahead of me, the click of her heels like staccato hoof beats, audible even over the terminal’s din. “I trust your flight was comfortable?”

I did my best to keep up in my flats, trying not to scurry. “Well, you know O’Hare. I’m just glad to be here in Memphis. I see why you make it your home, ma’am.”

The wolfish men took my bags from the carousel, and soon we were all in the back of Ms. Hunter’s limousine, cruising along the highway toward her fabled resort residence. The tinted windows turned daylight to twilight.

Her dark gaze pierced me. “Dr. Sutton, we have spoken in brief already, but you know my interest in the Moon. I have, in my collection, the capsule from Apollo 18. It is my wish to travel there, and you claim to have a way. Explain.”

So intent was her stare that I had to catch my breath. “Well, yes, in theory…”

“In theory? Please, don’t waste my time like those amateurs in the Artemis Project.”

“N-no, not like those guys. I mean, they mean well…”

She interrupted me. “Yes, but so is the Starfleet Command club. I’d sooner back those lunatics lobbying to make Jello Wrestling an Olympic sport. I want results.”

“Allow me to show you something,” I said, and opened my purse. I reached within and drew out a small wooden jewelry box.

She took it from me and the hinges creaked as she looked inside. Her eyes flicked from the contents to me. “Is this?”

“Yes. Regolith,” I said, struggling to keep my smile from cracking into a grin.

“If real, this sample is worth… a quarter of a million dollars, I’d say.”

“At least that,” I said. “But since you have pledged such a generous amount to our Kickstarter, you may keep it.”

She snapped her fingers again, and one of the wolfish men handed her a loupe. Its light pierced the gloom of the limo’s interior. “Very generous for a project strapped for funds. How did you get it?”

“Our prototype quantum translocation device. We sent a modified Roomba through a portal to bring this back. It will need a lot more power and equipment to send humans through. Not to mention spacesuits.”

She snapped the box shut. “A portal? So there is no rocketry involved? Pity.”

“This is far safer, ma’am.”

She waved a hand. “Never mind. A portal has other symbolism that pleases me. That and your name.”

“My name?”

“Yes, it pleases me. You have my patronage, Dionne.”

We shook hands, and I had a desire to howl with joy.

Tomorrow, we will find out whether my story advances in the Iron Writer Spring 2015 Tournament by winning the Kurt Vonnegut bracket. I can’t tell you which story is mine, so you’ll just have to read all four and vote your conscience. They’re all good stories!

Also, I hope to have more news about the first Tipsy Fairy Tales novel, Blue Spirit, any day now.

Announcing my ROAD GHOSTS PREQUEL! Cover Reveal! Not Whiteboard Wednesday!

Phony Ghosts

Before Road Ghosts – They were afraid of nothing, and that’s just what they found!

That’s right, Road Ghosts fans! I’m starting a new paranormal adventure, this time toning the horror-lite down several notches, to bring you PHONY GHOSTS, the story of Brett and Lizzie hunting ghosts the old fashioned way, by hanging out in moldy basements, abandoned cemeteries, and even in the homes of crackpots, meticulously going over hundreds of hours of audio and video recordings. Will the next photo contain dust, or questionable evidence!?!?! Set back in the days when haunted locations could be visited for free, this early 2000’s throwback is sure to excite the same paranormal investigation purists who loved the first season episodes of SYFY’s GHOST HUNTERS where Jason and Grant found absolutely no evidence of hauntings whatsoever! It’s the new ULTIMATE GHOST HUNTING REALISM genre that is sweeping the world of paranormal fiction!

It’s been since July 2013 since Blue Spirit was available for sale (other than the last few paperbacks of the old version I had), and so I’m very excited to tell you that it is BACK. Or it will be, through Seventh Star Press, next month. The ebook layout (minus artwork) is done, and review copies are being sent out now (let me know if you would like to get an advance copy in exchange for a review).

‘Scuse me while I kiss the Skye – a peek at Blue Spirit

skye-cropNow, I have to confess, I kiss with my eyes closed. I like to be carried away by the sensations. I love to lose myself in my lover’s affections. But just then, I heard a twig snap, and I opened my eyes.

I wished I hadn’t. My life might have been complete, had I only had just another hour or two to just enjoy that kiss, and well, I didn’t quite know what would have followed…. But I opened my eyes and didn’t get a chance to find out.

We were surrounded by sharp, pointy, glinting-tipped pikes, held by Her Royal Bitchiness’ froggy foot soldiers.

They all looked pissed off, too.

– a snip of Blue Spirit, coming to you next month!

Moxie Magnus on Whiteboard Wednesday!

Moxie Magnus

For Whiteboard Wednesday, I decided my dear friend Moxie would make a great guest star on my blog! She is of course the fabulous Chief Cosmetology Officer of the Federation Starship Enterprise under Captain James T. Kirk. Lucky for me, she’s a time traveler as well, so I’ve had the joy of hanging out with her at several Starbase Indy conventions and an InConjunction or two. Her show is always a lot of fun, but be careful if she asks if you want to touch her Tribble.

Whiteboard Wednesday: On track with Trans-Continental: Girl in the Gears!

Trans-Continental: Girl in the Gears

I’ve mentioned Trans-Continental before, it is a steampunk story with a transgender main character. Well, as of less than a week ago, I finished my first draft of the first novella, Girl in the Gears! I’ve got it out to beta readers, and am anxiously awaiting their feedback. I’m also talking with an artist about possible cover ideas, and have an editor lined up for the final editing phase after I make changes based on beta input.

Silly Hat Books logo

So yeah, I am putting this title out under my Silly Hat Books indie label. Why, when I have two great small press publishers I work with already? I plan to put out other stuff with both of them in the future for sure, and I like working with them. But at times I really want to dig in with both hands and do things on my own. Translation: I might have control issues. And this story’s important to me for a few reasons, so I want to run with it and see where it takes me.

Story time. I went with my wife to a psychic fair (to raise money for charity) and had a tarot reading from a friendly psychic named Cinder. She laid out the cards and couldn’t make sense of them and almost re-dealt, but something in them told me to tell her I’m transgender and an author, and that made them come into focus for her. She told me that I should write a transgender novella around the solstice of the year. I smiled and had warm fuzzies, but kind of dismissed the idea, not sure I wanted to be “that trans author” and I didn’t even have a story idea in mind yet.

And then, in November, having forgotten the conversation, the seed idea for Trans-Continental: Girl in the Gears came to me in a dream. I dreamed about a trans woman in a steampunk world, flying around in an airship with an artful dodger type companion, only their airship had no ladder, so they could only get out in high places. It was very much like a wild steampunk story that Katina French might tell. I got up at 2:30 in the morning and scribbled down everything I could remember before it could fade. And in December, I started writing. It is set in the same steampunk world that we see as one of the realities Lee Green calls the “silly hat world”, though I’ve developed it a lot more than that glimpse we got in Reality Check.

Anyway, I’m excited about the project, and will be bringing you more news as it develops. I hope to have it out in by June or July.

Ghosts. Demons. Gumbo. Road Trip! My Road Ghosts Trilogy – Four ’til Late on sale for 99 cents today only!

I’m breaking the news to you first! Seventh Star Press is having a spotlight on my Road Ghosts books today, including the 99 cent sale (Kindle, Nook, iBookstore, and Kobo) on Four ’til Late I mentioned in the Subject line.

So hit the road for adventure with Brett, Gonzo, Liz, and Jimbo, and you’ll find strange things along the way: ghosts, a demon, and some really mysterious gumbo.

“Well-timed backstory, well-drawn characters, and genuine scares all come together in a tale that hides wisdom behind its shroud of fog and fury. Join pagan witch, innocent bystander, and friends just looking for music and a well-chilled beer, and enjoy this Halloween tale.” – Sheila Deeth

“So, yeah; this is “horror,” but it’s not like a slasher movie. This is the nerdy/geeky horror with limited blood on the ground, but spooky all the same. The characters read like people, not like imaginary constructs. Come to think of it, maybe you should grab your light saber, instead of those dog treats.” – Lori Parker
