Inconjunction 2015: Success! Also, I have an Instagram problem…

InConjunction is a science fiction & fantasy convention in Indianapolis, held every year on Independence Day Weekend. And it was a great year, I sold more books at this InCon than the previous two combined, and beat my overall record for books sold at a single event. I’ll confess: I had sold no books on Friday and none on Saturday — until 2pm. I was in the pit of despair. However. In the next three hours alone, I doubled the previous year. InCon folks who bought my books often said they’d read Reality Check and wanted to read more. Others noticed that Girl in the Gears was priced to sell, which made it easier to take a chance on me as a new-to-them author.

Anyway, I’ll tell my InCon story in pictures and captions below. As you can tell from the filtering of the photos, I’ve got a full-on Instagram (@echrisgarrison) addiction, and I only signed up on THURSDAY. Help me.

Buy my books!

Here I am, in hippie-steampunk-slacker attire on Saturday, hawking my new releases and old standards. Trans-Continental: Girl in the Gears sold especially well!

David Jobe's "morning face.

David Jobe made his spectacular debut with his first release: The Broken Ones, a dark superhero novel that shows great promise. I have to say, he did far better with his first book at his first con than I did in my first couple of years going to cons as an author. The Force is strong in this one.

Steampunk Snow Queen wants to know, do you want to hear a story?

Stealing hearts, beguiling children, and generally being the badass Steampunk Disney Princess that she is, Katina French wowed the crowd in a blue satin dress and a hook-closure leather corset and goggles. Who could say no to her winsome charm? Okay, I am fangirling, I love Kat’s stuff, and I am jealous of her costumes. I have much to learn from her, as well.

Books and Boos

Despite being haunted by Lost Soles (ask R.J., it’s his fault), our new book racks were filled with awesome. And by awesome, I mean our books. And by our, I mean the Speculative Fiction Guild. Hear us roar.

"It's only the Security Guy... Come on, I'm hungry!"

InCon itself was full of fannish randomness, like the It’s Not Out Fault Players’ revival of their short musical play, “Little Con of Horrors”. Here, the murderous machiavellian space plant (left) is warping the mind and sullying the soul of the hapless Gofer (right). Pollinate! Pollinate!

Can Urkel save us from...oh man, do we even have enough beer for this?

I had to include this, it was the Major Award I won at Lou Harry’s Pub Trivia. Warning: the back has a spoiler, since it is a sequel, knowing that one of these title monsters survived gives away the ending to the first. Bonus: Robert Picardo, the Doctor from Star Trek Voyager, is in this one. Also: Urkel. Wow.

RJ and (not pictured) John

My buddy RJ Sullivan powers up with coffee on Saturday morning. I wish I had a picture of John F. Allen here, but he was kind of a blur going from thing to thing all weekend.

June sales of my #steampunk #transgender book, Girl in the Gears raised over $70 for @translifeline! #transgender #TransLivesMatter #TransIsBeautiful

I dedicated all June online sales of Trans-Continental: Girl in the Gears to the IMG_20150702_143718Trans Lifeline, a crisis hotline staffed by transgender people for transgender people, since we (and I do mean me) are one of the highest risk groups for suicide. I struggle with my own depression and anxiety, and while I haven’t had to use the Trans Lifeline, it means more than I can express that it is there for me and others like me. THANK YOU!

So, I rounded it to $100 and sent off a donation just a few minutes ago.

Even though my sales promotion is done, I urge you to give to the charity directly:

http://www.translifeline.org/donate/

My book was inspired by several things that came together at the same time. Trans Day of Remembrance, my own public coming out last year, Leelah Alcorn’s death, and a dream I had. That, and the comments in the trans community that even though shows like Transparent or Orange is the New Black are wonderful, positive exposure for trans people in the more mainstream — a definite order of magnitude better than being “represented” by Jerry Springer-like talk shows and Ru Paul’s Drag Race — trans stories, OUR stories, weren’t being told much by US. And much of what’s out there shows us as villains, tricksters, or victims, prostitutes and punchlines.

So this book has a trans main character who has her own adventures, and it’s NOT a transition story, it’s NOT about being abused, beat up, or killed for being trans. It’s a fun story with fun characters, and while Ida does face some specifically trans issues in the course of the story, she’s got a lot else going for her. Ida lives life WHILE trans, not DESPITE being trans, if that makes any sense.

Oh, and even though my charity promotion is over, you can still get the book, and the Kindle ebook is still free if you get the paperback on Amazon:

And if you have Prime or Kindle Unlimited, you can borrow the Kindle ebook and I’ll get paid by the pages you read. If you don’t have a Kindle reader, there’s an app for that on all tablets and smartphones, and even for PC and Mac.

InConjunction 2015 here I come! Plus: Get a Magic Token!

InconJunction 2014Amy and I have been going to InConjunction Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention in Indianapolis since 2009 as fans, and this is my third year as a guest and vendor.

I will be with other Speculative Fiction Guild folks: R.J. Sullivan, John F. Allen, David Jobe, Katina French, Nathan & Laura Terhune, and Matthew Barron at a set of tables in the dealers’ room, which is open to the public, no badge required! Come see us!

New this year, I am officially launching Blue Spirit: A Tipsy Fairy Tale (Seventh Star Press) and Trans-Continental: Girl in the Gears (Silly Hat Books), and will have my complete Road Ghosts Trilogy (SSP) as well as perennial favorite, Reality Check (Hydra Publications).

Transit King Magic Tokens!

Transit King Magic Tokens!

I’m also going to have some new swag! Lovely Blue Spirit bookmarks, plus a limited supply of wooden coins: The Transit King’s Magic Tokens! These things are rumored to bring the best of luck in traffic-related situations. Keeping one on you might not always get you primo parking, but you will find a spot. Lay one on the dashboard, and you might get something akin to spidey sense just before a potential accident. The list of possible magical benefits goes on and on.

How can you get your very own Transit King Magic Token? Well, stop by my booth at InConjunction and find out. I can guarantee that buying my books is a nearly surefire way to leave with one of these babies in the palm of your hand.

Last day to get Girl in the Gears to benefit Trans Lifeline charity! @translifeline

GitG-20150630

Trans-Continental: Girl in the Gears ranking at #58 in LGBT Science Fiction overnight.

moonie-gitgI made a call out yesterday, since today is the last day for my pledge to donate all proceeds of June sales of my “trans-steampunk” adventure book, Girl in the Gears, to the Trans Lifeline suicide prevention hotline. Overnight, the Kindle edition made it to #58 in LGBT Science Fiction & Fantasy! It has been in the top 10 before, but I will take any positive ranking as Trans_Lifelinewe come down to the wire.

Tomorrow, I’ll announce the grand total raised. If you want to help out, you can buy a paperback or ebook, but if you get the paperback, the ebook comes with it for free. For now.

But if you’re not interested in my book, please consider donating to Trans Lifeline anyway:

The Trouble With Moxie – A very Star Trek Whiteboard Wednesday @MoxieMagnus

The Trouble With Moxie

Moxie Anne Magnus, Chief Cosmetology Officer of the USS Enterprise, enjoying her visit to K-7 Station.

My dear friend Moxie had a birthday this week*, and I drew this for the occasion to commemorate her recent shore leave fun on K-7 Station.

Moxie was kind enough to encourage me with Girl in the Gears, and gave me the best blurb ever for it:

“What do you get when you cross Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with Thelma and Louise? Our heroines, Ida and Duffy. They put the ‘team’ back in ‘Steampunk’.”

– Moxie Anne Magnus

So, Happy Birthday, Moxie! If you haven’t met Moxie, you should check out her web page or do what you can to meet her at one of her many convention or stage appearances:

http://www.moxiemagnus.com

* Though with a time traveller like Moxie, that can be a difficult concept.

The Seven Levels of Skye!

image

Danse Macabre Skye by Nell Williams

In my Bitten by Books interview, Sheila Deeth asked a great question:

Loved the interview! And I like how you describe Skye’s 3 levels. I remember reading once, long ago and I’ve no idea where, that there were 7 levels of consciousness. If you had to come up with seven levels (real world, computer world, fae…) what would you add?

My answer:
What a great question! And a tough one!

The Seven Levels of Skye:

1) Physical. Skye’s body and clothing. She’s tall, not especially strong or weak, wears feminine outfits, and is often under the influence of alcohol.
2) Perceptions. We see the world through Skye’s senses, which are often not clear due to alcohol, or due to perceptions of different worlds overlaid.
3) Social. Skye’s REAL superpower is that she’s beloved by friends despite her many flaws. She’s got a great support network, and she brings people together with her awkward charisma.
4) Real World. Skye lives in Indianapolis, and starts off with a job, and lives with Stuart. These environments shift and change around her, and she has to adjust.
5) Cyberspace. She’s somewhat involved in Stuart’s online game world, and also interacts with friends online, and loves to play the Sims.
6) LARPspace. Skye may be a barista who rides the bus in real life, but she’s royalty in the Vampire Live Action Roleplaying Game she plays with her friends. She shines in this imaginary world.
7) Fairy space. Skye has a foot in this very real magical dimension that exists alongside our own world, and a bit of her soul in the form of Minnie lives there fulltime.

Coming July 2nd: The 2015 Iron Writer Summer Solstice Tournament! (and I’m in it) #amwriting

coollogo_com-18904462Bad News / Good News!

The Bad News is that my story, “Singularity Bar” came in second in The Iron Writer Challenge #116.

The Good News is, I have somehow advanced to the Summer Solstice Tournament anyway! I’ll be competing in the Preliminary Round as part of the Eric Carle Bracket, starting on June 25th, when the 4 story elements will be posted and the smack laid down.

I will then have 4 days to write a 500 word flash story using those 4 elements. Then, on July 2nd, all 10 stories (5 in my bracket, 5 in the other) will post for YOU to vote on! I’ve never won a Quarterly Tournament, so this could be my chance. More on this later, wish me luck!
